General information

When I set about creating a workshop, I envisioned a place where students and colleagues could take a break from ongoing projects and reconnect with the joy that comes from birthing something out of the blue and under the gun.

Collaboration is a gift, and I’ve been in more than a few situations where voices combine to make something great. But before we collaborate at our best, we need to remember/discover what individual voices we bring to the table.

While each course is different, all my courses are designed with the goal of providing broad-based exposure to many aspects of professional lyric writing, including (and especially) on-the-fly creative blockbusting. All classes in form, prompt and comedy combine a bit of each (not to mention lively discussion). The true goal, however, is in-class development of creative work, both individually and collaboratively. All levels of experience are welcome, and all lessons touch upon surprises, joys and creative challenges I have experienced in my own 30+ years of professional lyric writing.

As a rule, sessions include:

1) 1.5 to 3 hour session format (depending on class size);

2) An in-class, creative blockbusting exercise, discussion or lecture;

3) An optional homework assignment applicable to either existing work or the work engendered in class exercises.

Class sizes are small, usually between 3-14 students. As I put more sessions together, I might have some larger classes. As a rule, standard sessions will have a maximum size of 12 participating, with perhaps a few more auditing and listening. Classes with less than 3 students signed up are subject to reschedule.

Sessions are currently scheduled to take place via Zoom.
